Chapter 7: A
Friendly Hand

Donnie stared at the turtle who laid on the couch. “I cant believe you got her mutated.” April said in such disgust.
“April---” Donnie turns to her.
“Don’t talk to me….you said she’d be safe! You told me not to worry, she’s in good hands!” April pointed to her friend. “You think mutating her was keeping her safe!”
Donnie looked down in shame. He frowned. Mikey got in between Donnie and April. “Chill April, Donnie had nothing to do with this. Esme saved Raph and I by pushing us outta the way.”
April glared at Mikey then stared at Donnie, she saw how hurt he looked, with those big brown eyes, how could she stay mad. She sighed. “Okay, Im sorry…..” She looked at her friend. “So what now?”
“What do you mean?” Donnie asked.
“What will happen now?”
“Well she cant go out now, she’s a mutant…. Her life has forever changed.” Leo said.
Raph kneeled down to Esme and held onto her hand. He stared at her. “I think we should let her do what she thinks is best for her.”
“Raph we cant possibly let her go----” Raph glared at Leo.
“She isn’t ours to control Leo, if she wants to leave then we’ll let her.”
“Raph think clearly, if she goes to the surface she could get herself killed.”
Raph stared at Leo then turned back to Esme. He frowned. This is all his fault, if he had caught her before she even left the lair she wouldn’t be in this situation. He laid his head down on his arms on the side of the couch. A hand laid on his shell making him look up. It was Mikey. His eyes were serious. “Raph, I know you don’t want to listen to Leo, but he’s right. If you want her safe, you need to convince her its safer down here.”
Raph was a bit shocked that his baby brother was actually giving good advice, he noticed Leo and Donnie were also in shock, even April was.
Mikey crossed his arms across his chest and pouted. “You know you can stop looking at me like that!”
“Sorry Mikey its just, your advice….”
“Well I am smart to, maybe not a braniac like Donnie but I do have a brain.”
“So why don’t you use it?” Donnie asked.
Mikey shrugged. “Its not fun thinking all the time, it gives me a headache.”
The three brothers watched their youngest leave for his room. They looked at one another. April sighed. “Im going home…..call me when she gets up.”
Donnie rushed to her side. “L-let me walk you home!” He smiled and walked along side her.
Raph sighed then turned to Leo. Leo gazed at Raph. “Don’t stay up to late okay…..we have training tomorrow.”
“When don’t we?” Raph shook his head and watched Leo go towards the room. Raph turned to where his shell was up against the couch. His eyes set on the TV for about ten minutes, then sleep won its battle and consumed him.
Esme gazed down at the ground and her legs. She woke up a few minutes ago surprised to see her transformation. She sat down where the waterway was. She stared down at the water and frowned at her reflection. She looked at her hands. A turtle? Her legs were tucked under her, her hand on her head. At least she still had her hair. Tears formed in her eyes.
“Hey…” A voice startled her, she looked up to see Donnie standing in front of her. He sat cross legged beside her. “You okay?”
She frowned as she looked down at the water. “No….just look at me…im gross….”
Donnie made a face, Esme glanced up and blushed. “I mean… I didn’t mean it like that…”
Donnie gave her crooked smile, showing his gap. “Its okay.”
Esme cleared her throat and stared at her hands. “Its just, im so different, im not human…”
Donnie grabbed onto her hand and lifted her head up to have her look at him. “Maybe being different isn’t so bad. So what if your not human on the outside….its whats on the inside that counts right?”
“I guess….” Esme turned away. Donnie sighed and for a moment he let the silence linger until he got a spankin idea. He scooted closer to her and laid a arm around her. She looked up at him with red cheeks. “Donnie what are you doing?”
“Showing you something….look down at the water.” Donnie instructed.
She did. She saw hers and Donnies reflection. “Now tell me what you see?”
She frowned. “You and one ugly mutant….” She sighed. Donnie gazed over at her then the water. “You know what I see?”
“What?”
“A beautiful girl, with a strong mind, and a stubborn attitude. A girl who really never cared what was on the outside…I mean that’s why you like my brother don’t you?”
Esme blushed and stared at Donnie. Donnie rolled his eyes and looked at her. “Oh come on, its so obvious you two are liking each other, even when you were human and he’s a mutant you still liked him….right?”
Esme turned redder. “I guess.”
“So don’t think to much on the appearance of someone, and focus more on who they are.” Donnie laid a hand on her head and smiled. “I still see the girl we met, and you know what….even with green skin and a shell, your still a beautiful girl…”
“Really?”
“Sure, because you got a beautiful personality.” Donnie kissed her forehead and got up. “Don’t dwell on the mutation so much and just take it easy. You’ll be happier if you do.” He added before walking off to his lab. Esme smiled. She gazed at her appearance one last time before getting up and hopping over the couch. She sat right next to Raph and laid her head on his shoulder. She wrapped her arms around his arm and cozied up to him, feeling much better.
Thanks Donnie. She secretly said before drifting off into a peaceful slumber.
