Chapter 3:
Sweet Moments


Donnie came out of his lab and shut the door, before he could get anything out he was practically attacked by his three brothers, Master, and April.
“Is she okay?” Mikey asked.
“How is her wounds they did look terrible!” Leo pointed out.
“Is she awake!? Can I see her?” Raphael asked.
“Me too, Donnie!?” April threw out a little whine as she called out his name. Donnie smiled at her and held up his hands in surrenderment.
“Silence! Let Donatello have some space and a chance to voice out his thoughts.”
They all backed up, they stared with such intention and worry.
Donnie cleared his throat. “Apparently she’s suffered the injuries before the kraang, the only injury she suffered from them was a laser shooting to the back near the right shoulder blade.”
“How can that be? She was shocked by that plate! I saw it!”
“All that did was open up her wounds that were already there.”
“Can I see her Donnie?” April begged.
Donnie cupped his chin then looked down for a moment, when his eyes made his way onto April he saw those big blue eyes on him and her lower lip out. Heat suddenly grew beneath his cheeks. So cute! Donnie cleared his throat. “Well I don’t see why not, just keep it down.” Donnie moved out of the way letting them enter.
Raph stood beside Esme and frowned down at her. Esme was covered by a blanket that was hidden away in Mikey’s closet. Esme groaned. April laid a hand on the girls head. “How long will she be out?” Raph asked.
“Well I gave her some medicine to help the pain subside. She needs lots of rest. We should give her it and leave.”
April looked as if she was about to protest but Donnie laid his hand on her back and gazed in her eyes. “April theres nothing we can really do except leave her to her rest. Its late. You should head home.”
“But----”
“Don’s right, Donnie take her on home. We can watch the fort here.” Leo ordered.
Donnie gripped April’s shoulders in a gentle fashion and lead her out of the lab. Mikey was already out. Leo headed for the doors but noticed Raph wasn’t following. “Raph come on….”
“Ill leave when I want to Leo.” Raph purred in a deep darkening voice. Leo stared at his younger brother, wanting to just drag him out but that would get him no where, so Leo left him alone. Once the lab door was shut Raph took a seat in Donnie’s rolling chair and rolled it over to the cot. He gazed down at the girl. He moved a strand of hair that laid upon her baby face. Raph sighed and leaned back in the chair, resting his feet on the foot of the bed, his hand close to hers, he noticed it too. Red colored his face as he took a hold of her hand. His eyes closed. Soon enough he drifted into the dark abyss.
“Donnie maybe I need to stay at the lair.” April said as she started back to the lair. Donnie raced after her, encountering her stopping her.
“April as much as I would love you to be there-----I mean not love, just like---- I just think its best if you go home, you’ve had a hard day.”
“What do you expect me to do?? Sleep while my friend may be endangered.”
Donnie blinked. “She wont be endangered, she will be watched by us.”
“She needs a real doctor Donnie, not a mutant who plays doctor.” April growled in frustration.
Donnie frowned and looked down, he doesn’t play doctor at all, he knows how to be a doctor. “April….” He held her by her shoulders and stared into her eyes. “I know your worried…..but I promise you I wont let anything happen to her, I’ll protect her with my life just as I protect you.”
April blinked, startled by Donnie’s words, suddenly feeling guilty about calling him a fake doctor. She sighed and laid her fore head on his plastron. “Im sorry Donnie.” Donnie gazed down a bit taken aback by April’s actions and he held her waist.
“Don’t worry about it. Now lets get you home.” He scooped her up in his arms and made his way up to April’s aunt’s balcony. Once she was in her room he smiled at her. “Now you promise me something.”
“What?”
“Get some sleep. For weeks now you’ve been stressed…..im worried about you.”
April felt heat surrounding her cheeks. “Thanks Donnie. No need to worry. I’ll be okay.”
“Promise?”
“I swear.”
Donnie stared at April for a bit till he sighed. “Alright. Just get some sleep.” He told her before jumping up onto the room. He threw one last smile at her. She smiled back and waved. He waved before disappearing into the dark shadows.
Raph gasped as his eyes opened. He breathed heavy. Sweat covered his shaking body. He swiped at his face. just a dream…..just a dream… His eyes shifted onto Esme to see her still asleep. He got to his feet and kneeled down to get closer to her. Both his hands now clasped around hers. “Esme….wake up…” He lightly shook her body, his eyes widened at how cold she was. Fear struck him. He checked her pulse. Nothing. He laid his head on her chest to find a faint heart beat. He looked down at her and patted her cheek a bit. “Esme!”
No response.
“Esme come on its time for you to wake up!” Raph said, his voice cracking a little. He grabbed her shoulders and shook her a bit. “Esme! Esme! Wake up!” He projected his voice. He got up and rushed out to the lair to find nothing but a dark hallway ahead. He turned to see Esme gone, along with the whole lab. “Esme!?” He voiced then looked down the hallway.
“Leo!? Donnie!? Mikey!?” Raph called out as he slowly made his way down with caution. Nothing. He pulled out his sais when a door appeared before him, a shriek filled the dark abyss. Raph widened his eyes as he realized where he was.
Back where it had happened. Where he almost lost her. Raph ran towards the door and was expecting it to stay closed, but suddenly it opened, throwing him off balance making him do a faceplant onto the floor. Looking up, rubbing his face he saw something deadly, himself holding up a dead female turtle, sai was thrashed into her chest. The girl opened her eyes and looked down at Raph. Blood trickled down to her chin. “Raph….how could you…..you changed me into this form…only to kill me….”
Raph screamed in terror as he watched the female turtle get thrown away like a rag doll along with the sai. He turned with a scowl, looking up at his evil self wanting to lash out, only he was to late. Another sai flung towards him, A shriek filled the air when Raph’s eyes popped open, he gasped and flung himself into a sitting position.
“Are you okay!?” A girl asked.
Looking up he saw Esme staring down at him. She was wrapped up in the blanket. He laid a hand on his pounding heart. He nodded mutedly, not trusting his voice.
“That must have been some dream.” Esme said as she sat on the edge of the bed.
“More like a nightmare…” He shivered.
Esme rose a brow. “A nightmare? Yeah I get those….sometimes I don’t wake up though…..”
Raph blinked. “Why are you up?” He asked, changing the subject quickly.
She shrugged. “Had a nightmare….” She looked down with sad eyes and clutched her tummy as pain filled her. Raph saw right through that lie. He saw that look a dozen of times. He himself made that look to his brothers so he could stay in the fight, or go out and fight.
“Liar.” Raph declared.
Esme cheeks puffed out and her eyes sent daggers at him. “I am no liar!”
“That’s right, your not because you suck at it.” Raph stuck his tongue out at her and dodged her attempted hits. He caught her by the arm and looked into her eyes. “Now stop lying to me, its pointless. Whats the matter with you.”
She stood up and pulled back, she rubbed her arm. “None of your business.”
Raph stood up on his feet and got closer. “It is my business. Your on my territory.”
“And you think just cause of that im going to tell you?” She scoffed. “Don’t make me laugh hot head.”
Raph snarled. “Look missy im warning you----”
“Or what? You gonna hit me!? Go ahead, im already used to that!” She snapped.
Raph froze for a moment. “What?”
“If your gonna hit me then do it now, if not then just leave.”
“Why on earth would I hit you?” Raph questioned as he inched closer to her. Esme shrugged. “Usually that’s what guys do….when they get mad….”
Raph frowned and laid his hand on her shoulder. “Well not me, I don’t make it a habit to hit women, no matter how mad I am.”
Esme looked up at him with surprised eyes. All she ever knew was abuse. As she gazed up at those green eyes, something in her changed, something that she couldn’t figure out. Pain filled her body again she clutched onto her tummy as she felt her knees buckle, arms wrapped around her. Their bodies close together, their faces inches apart.
Raph blushed as he gazed into those eyes of hers. Esme felt hot and flushed while she was transfixed onto his lime green eyes, such beautiful eyes.
“Are you okay?” Raph asked as he held her up.
Esme nodded her head, speechless. The two suddenly tore apart when the lab door slid open. Donnie came in to see Raph looking odd and Esme covering herself up more with the blanket, her face was red, so was Raph. Donnie cocked his head. “What’s with you two.”
“Nothing.” They chorused then looked at each other. Their faces got redder. Raph was the first to look away.
“Donnie, check her out, she’s in pain. Its probably her appendix.” He informed before rushing out the door.
Esme sighed and blew a strand of hair out of her face.
